In April 2025, Efie Gallery, a prominent contemporary art gallery originally based in Dubai, is set to unveil its new location at Alserkal Avenue. This move to a freshly renovated, two-story space spanning 4,400 square feet marks a significant milestone for the gallery. The new venue, designed with a sleek modern aesthetic incorporating concrete, wood, and steel, features a 1,500 square foot main exhibition area on the ground floor. With ceilings soaring to 30 feet, this space is perfectly suited for displaying large-scale artworks. Additionally, the gallery will introduce the Rekord Gallery, an innovative immersive listening room accessible via a trap door, equipped with 360-degree audio, mirrored ceilings, and custom-designed furniture.
Established in 2021, Efie Gallery has quickly gained recognition for its dedication to showcasing artists of African descent, both from the continent and the global diaspora. The gallery has become a significant player on the international art scene, representing renowned artists such as El Anatsui, Abdoulaye Konaté, and Aïda Muluneh.
Basmah El-Bittar, Director of Alserkal Avenue, expressed enthusiasm about the gallery's relocation, stating, "We are thrilled to welcome Efie Gallery to the Avenue. Their commitment to amplifying the voices of artists of African origin is something we deeply admire, and their presence heralds an exciting new chapter for our program."
To celebrate the gallery's grand opening, Cuban artist María Magdalena Campos-Pons will present her first solo exhibition in the Middle East. Curated by Faridah Folawiyo, the exhibition, titled "I Am Soil. My Tears Are Water," will run from April 14 to May 24, 2025.
Efie Gallery, a family-operated enterprise, will continue under the leadership of co-founder Kwame Mintah. Reflecting on the move, Mintah remarked, "Alserkal Avenue offers the ideal environment for us to push creative boundaries, presenting ambitious exhibitions that both challenge and inspire. We eagerly anticipate welcoming visitors to a space where art and music dynamically intersect."
