In a significant move to broaden its international presence, Art Basel is set to launch a new modern and contemporary art fair in Qatar, with the inaugural event scheduled for February 2026 in Doha. This development adds another prestigious event to Art Basel's renowned series of global art fairs.
Noah Horowitz, the Chief Executive Officer of Art Basel, stated that this initiative is in line with the organization's mission to enhance the global art market, support artists and galleries, and attract new audiences to the world of art collection. The fair is a joint venture involving MCH Group, Art Basel's parent company, Qatar Sports Investments (QSI), and QC+, a group recognized for its expertise in cultural commerce.
Art Basel Qatar will be hosted at the M7 creative hub and the Doha Design District, situated in the heart of Msheireb. This location is strategically selected for its closeness to significant landmarks like the National Museum of Qatar, offering an enriched cultural experience for attendees.
Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa Bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, chairperson of Qatar Museums, emphasized Qatar's evolution into a knowledge-based economy as part of the National Vision 2030. With a focus on culture and creative industries, Qatar has launched numerous cultural institutions, such as the Lusail Museum and DADU: Children’s Museum of Qatar, further solidifying its status as a cultural hub.
Future initiatives include the Art Mill Museum and a permanent Qatar Pavilion in Venice. Horowitz highlighted that Art Basel Qatar will act as a new platform to engage diverse audiences, utilizing Qatar's rich collections and cultural heritage to establish a strong presence on the global art scene.
The fair will showcase a curated selection of top galleries and artists, aiming to address current market needs while paving the way for future expansion. Through educational programs, market development strategies, and public arts engagement, Art Basel Qatar plans to integrate seamlessly into Qatar's cultural landscape, enhancing its network of collectors and galleries.
Andrea Zappia, Chairman and Group CEO at MCH Group, expressed enthusiasm about the project, describing it as a pioneering collaboration that will draw art enthusiasts from across the globe.
