In a significant development for the art community, the India Art Fair, which has been a cornerstone of South Asia's art scene since 2008, is set to expand its reach to Mumbai in November 2025. This new edition, focusing on contemporary art, will showcase between 50 to 70 artists from both local and international backgrounds. The event will take place at Mumbai's Jio World Garden from November 13th to 16th, 2025.
Jaya Asokan, who currently directs the India Art Fair in Delhi, will lead this new initiative. She shared her enthusiasm for the expansion, stating, "We are excited to introduce a contemporary art and design fair to Mumbai's vibrant cultural landscape, which is home to many of our long-standing exhibitors, partners, patrons, and visitors. The demand for art in India has surged in recent years, making this the ideal moment to launch a bold new fair centered on contemporary art."
The India Art Fair Contemporary is strategically scheduled on the global art calendar to align with the third edition of Art Mumbai. Asokan envisions a collaborative atmosphere, suggesting that the "two dynamic fairs" will create a "significant market moment for Mumbai." However, Art Mumbai's co-founders, Minal and Dinesh Vazirani, have voiced concerns about the overlapping dates, questioning the rationale and business implications of this timing.
Despite these differing perspectives, the introduction of the India Art Fair Contemporary in Mumbai is set to be a landmark event in India's contemporary art landscape, promising to enrich the city's cultural tapestry.
